Ali Chaudhry was cautiously optimistic about Boonton’s chances in the triple jump at the Morris County Relays on Friday afternoon. Chaudhry, a Bombers senior, didn’t predict his team’s overall placement – but he texted former coach Joe Illeyne three numbers: 43, 42, 40, as in the number of feet each jumper would go.

Chaudhry actually underestimated Boonton’s potential. The Bombers won the event as all three jumpers posted personal bests. Junior T.J. Green led the field at 43 feet, 5 inches – a three-foot PR. Chaudhry was second at 42-5, with senior Chris D’Avanzo (41-2) adding more than a foot to his own total as well.

Boonton was the first team on the runway on Friday, because, as Green said, “We wanted to set the standard.” Those first attempts were all PRs, enabling the Bombers to surpass Illeyne’s current team, Mountain Lakes by nearly six feet.

“We wanted to jump first, because we were seeded up there,” Chaudhry said. “We wanted to take our first jumps, and wait and see what everyone else jumped.”

Senior Greg Stickle had the top intermediate hurdles time (55.76) as Randolph won the first event of the two-day meet. Stickle also anchored the Rams’ winning 4×100, giving the defending champs a two-point edge on Mendham after the first day of competition.

The Mendham girls won two of the first three events on the track for an eight-point advantage. Nickolette Dunbar once again led the shot put field (47-7.5), as Whippany Park took first place in that event – as well as the pole vault and long jump.

The Morris County Relays conclude this afternoon at Morris Knolls.

“Coach Roy) Hamblen said if we want to win the team title, we have to come in with confidence,” said Minutemen senior Sierra Tonnesen, who was part of both the intermediate hurdles and 4×100 victories, along with classmate Audrey O’Neill.

“Being able to see what we put in at practice during meets gives us confidence.”
