WISCONSIN DELLS – The Raiders lack of experience showed Friday in a 73-38 loss to Cedarburg.

The Wisconsin Rapids boys basketball team has two seniors on the 10-man roster, and, unfortunately, that youth showed throughout the game at Just a Game Field House.

More than half of the Raiders had never played varsity minutes before the opener

“We didn’t do some of the things that we needed to today, we were there earlier but then we just fell apart,” Wisconsin Rapids coach Dan Witter said. “We let them get a run and then it just got bigger and bigger.”

The Raiders will play in the tournament consolation game Saturday.

Junior guard Dylan Bassuener went 7-for-7 from the field to lead the team with 14 points. Ben Olson, another junior guard, had 10 points going 4-for-6 from the field and 2-for-7 from the free throw line.

Cedarburg led by 22 points at the half.

“(Cedbarburg) can shoot the ball very well, we knew that coming in,” Witter said. “It wasn’t like this was a shock, but we thought we would be able to compete because the teams we scrimmaged with, we competed with. Tonight we didn’t do very well.”

John Diener had 29 points to lead Cedarberg with, 11 points coming from the line. Jordan Johnson went 6 of 7 behind the arc and finished with 23 points for the Bulldogs in their win.

The Raiders struggled with communication on the court.

“We’ve been harping on communication all week and we got to get better, that’s one of the things we’re going to try and work on in practice,” Witter said.

The Raiders will face four more teams in the next week, including the Wisconsin Valley Conference opener against Wausau West.

“The schedule is not conducive to having an inexperienced team,” Witter said. “Five games in a week, you’ve got to grow up in a hurry. Hopefully we’ll learn some things (by Friday), the bad thing is you don’t have that much practice time to sure up some of the stuff so you’re kind of doing it on the fly.”
