The Rochester Red Wings’ playoff hopes were dashed as they lost 5-4 against the Pawtucket Red Sox on Thursday night.
Rochester (73-67) was eliminated from playoff content and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre clinched the International League North.
Rochester opened scoring in the top of the fourth on an RBI ground out by Xavier Avery that scored Reynaldo Rodriguez.
Rodriguez hit a solo home run in the fifth, his 16 home runs are tied for the team lead, to put the Red Wings up 2-0 in the fifth.
Pawtucket answered in the bottom of the inning with two runs to tie hte game at 2.
Deven Marrero advanced home after Logan Darnell’s throwing error on Marco Hernandez’s single for Pawtucket’s first run. Carlos Rivero followed with a single to score Hernandez.
Pawtucket’s added two more runs in the sixth, as Johnathan Roof hit a two-run homer to give the Red Sox a 4-2 lead.
Humberto Quintero plated Chris Marrero with a single in the seventh inning to extend Pawtucket’s lead to 5-2.
Rochester made a late push in the top of the ninth. Xavier Avery singled and Carlos Paulino doubled to begin the inning. Both baserunners scored on a single from Doug Bernier.
Rochester reliever Cole Johnson was tagged with the loss on the mound.
