Veteran referee John Griswold was hospitalized Friday night after collapsing at a Father Ryan High School football game Friday night at the Nashville campus.
The official fell on his back at the 45-yard line and raised up his arm with 3:19 left in the first quarter against McCallie School of Chattanooga.
Cheerleaders prayed in a circle on the track as he was carried into an ambulance, fans said.
Pat Lawson, Father Ryan athletic director, said the referee was taken to St. Thomas West and is believed to be in stable condition.
The entire crowd recited the “Our Father” as the ambulance left, and the game resumed.
“We wish him a speedy recovery and our thoughts and prayers are with him,” Lawson said.
At the start of the third quarter, announcer Matt Puryear told the crowd: “…we can now report that the official who was taken off the field is responsive and stable. His wife was with him at the hospital. We ask for your continued prayers for his complete recovery.”
