Report: Girls of color lacking opportunities to play high school sports

By

The National Women’s Law Center issued a report saying that girls of color are not receiving an equal opportunity to play high school sports.

The report states that only 39 percent of girls at heavily minority high schools have the opportunity to play sports as girls at heavily white schools do; only 67 percent of the opportunity to play sports as boys at heavily minority schools do; and only 32 percent of the opportunity to play sports as boys at heavily white schools do.

The introduction to the report begins this way:

“Our nation’s school remain highly segregated along racial and economic lines and schools with high concentrations of minority and low-income students generally have fewer resources for academic and extracurricular activities. Opportunities to play sports, which provide valuable benefits, are diminished for all students at these schools, but are particularly limited for girls.”

The findings fall in line with a six-part special series azcentral.com did on the influence of money on high schools sports. The lead story can be found here.

Special report: The Valley’s wealthier schools are able to attract more talent because the state allows open enrollment

In the Law Center report, girls/boys of color are defined as those who do not fall in the racial category of white. That includes Hispanics, African-Americans, Native Americans, etc. A heavily white school is defined by a student enrollment that is at least 90 percent white, while a heavily minority school is defined as having less than 10 percent that is white.
