Like a boxer before a prize fight, the Resurrection Christian football team postured and flexed its muscles Saturday.
It was like the Cougars were showing Class 1A that it is the total package, a foe that will be tough to beat.
In a 52-0 win over No. 15-seeded Peyton, No. 2 Resurrection Christian did everything well in an easy first-round playoff win played at Fossil Ridge High School.
The Cougars (10-0) offense rolled, special teams scored a touchdown and the defense was really, really good.
The blowout began on the strength of its special teams. With RCS already up 14-0, Brin Hayden blocked a Peyton (6-4) punt and returned it for a touchdown.
The route was on. Quarterback Michael Stevenson had two touchdown runs and a 21-yard shovel pass touchdown to Evan Anderson in the first half. Stevenson, also RCS’ kicker, nailed a 44-yard kick to end the half up 38-0.
“We came out really strong, probably stronger than we have all season,” Hayden said. “We played with a lot of passion.”
An early second-half touchdown pass from Hayden to Luke Fick started the mercy-rule running clock, something RCS has done to almost every opponent this season.
The defense was as spectacular as the offense. Peyton never threatened to score, and the Cougars recorded interceptions from Cooper Ward, Conner Stahla, Sam Barnett and Fick.
“I thought that our defense was stifling today,” coach Mark Roggy said. “It wouldn’t allow (Peyton) to get into any type of rhythm. When you give our offense that type of field position, we have the capacity to do a lot of things.”
For the Cougars, this is supposed to be the start of the journey. The Cougars made the 1A semifinals a year ago and have their sights set on a title.
They’ve left a path of wreckage in their wake, outscoring opponents 488-31 this season.
Next up is a quarterfinal game at No. 10 Meeker. The Cowboys upset No. 7 Platte Canyon 32-20 in the first round.
“Next week we’ll have to earn our keep,” Roggy said. “But this is a team that will be a tough out. I’ll say that.”
