With less than three minutes on the board, Rockets guard Daniel Alexander scored and tied the game at 73. Forward Nick Jackson followed up the bucket with a three-pointer to put Richard Montgomery ahead 76-73.

The Trojans, who met the Rockets’ aggressive man-to-man defense with accurate three-point shooting in the first half, didn’t go down without a fight. With 23 seconds left to go, Gaithersburg guard Brian Layman sunk a foul shot and brought the score to 76-74.

It looked like the Rockets were going to notch their 20th win of the season with a 76-74 victory, but the referees called a foul. Gaithersburg guard Anthony Tarke, who finished the night with 26 points, hit the free-throw line and scored his first shot. He missed the second and Richard Montgomery fans stormed the court to celebrate.

Head Coach David Breslaw said the Rockets had 17 turnovers in Friday’s game, when they have been averaging under 12 per game.

“It was a great win, showed how we push through adversity,” said Jackson, who finished the night with 22 points.

Richard Montgomery will look to continue its five-game winning streak against Blake on Monday and earned a first-round bye in the playoffs.

The Trojans (16-5) will cap off the regular season against Kennedy on Monday before heading into the playoffs.

“It was a very good test … and the atmosphere is great,” said Gaithersburg Head Coach Tom Sheahin of Friday’s match-up.
