Richie Burke collects 200th wrestling win for Ithaca


Richie Burke notched his 200th career victory in leading the Ithaca High wrestling team to a 43-38 victory over Binghamton in a Southern Tier Athletic Conference match on Wednesday night at Bliss Gym.

Burke got his milestone victory in style, pinning the Patriots’ Gordon Huang in 3 minutes, 3 seconds in the 145-pound match. Burke (19-1), who won the Jim Howard Award as the Most Outstanding Wrestler at the Windsor Christmas Tournament, will compete at the Eastern States Classic on Friday at Sullivan County Community College.

Other winners on the mat for Ithaca included Owen Wanck (113), Devon Welch (132) and Abe Messing (152).

Marathon 54, Odessa-Montour 30; Candor 66, Odessa-Montour 18: On Wednesday at Candor, Bill Bacon won by pin at 126 pounds for Odessa-Montour in the IAC match against Marathon.

Against Candor, Odessa-Montour got a pin from Joseph Rorick at 120.

Waverly 46, Dryden 30: On Wednesday at Dryden, Waverly got pins from Ethan Stotler at 99 pounds and AJ Burkhart at 113 to win the IAC match. Dryden winners, all by fall, included Samuel Dow (106), Jacob Gombas (138), Cody Senecal (145) and Chad Adams (220).

Boys’ basketball

Ithaca 56, Maine-Endwell 52: On Wednesday at Endwell, the Little Red took a 14-point lead into the fourth quarter and held off a Spartans rally in the final eight minutes.

Steven Stage led all scorers with 15 points for Ithaca, while Trevel De’Aragon chipped in nine.

Maine-Endwell, which outscored IHS 19-9 in the final quarter, was led by Mike Palmer and Shane Burcume (14 points apiece) and Drew Gallagher (12 points).

The Little Red (3-2) was scheduled to play at Elmira Thursday night; visit for results.
