In its earliest numerical rankings for a class, Rivals.com has a surprise at the top of its initial list for the Class of 2017 Top 100 in football.
Episcopal (Houston) defensive tackle Marvin Wilson is No. 1 is ahead of Dylan Moses, an LSU commit from University Lab (Baton Rouge, La.)
Rivals.com national recruiting director Mike Farrell refers to Moses as “1A” and points to added value being placed on defensive tackle, the position Wilson plays.
“Wilson wins out for many reasons — first off he’s a terrific prospect with good size, agility, quickness off the snap, balance and a motor that never stops,” Farrell says on Rivals.com. “And he plays a position that is weighed more than linebacker or running back, the two positions that Moses projects at right now. Defensive tackles have always been a huge need for college and NFL programs and now with Wilson and Dexter Lawrence they are starting to get their due.”
Lawrence from Wake Forest, N.C., is No. 1 by Rivals.com in the Class of 2016.
As for Moses, Farrell says, “He’s a dynamic athlete and just dominates at either running back or linebacker, whatever position he chooses to play and if he grows into that edge rusher many predicted, watch out.”
Dr. Phillips (Orlando) offensive tackle Calvin Ashley is No. 6, followed by Peachtree Ridger (Suwanne, Ga) safety DeAngelo Gibbs, Antioch (Calif.) Senior running back Najee Harris, St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) wide receiver Trevon Grimes and Vidalia (Ga.) linebacker Nate McBride at No. 10.
Two players went from unranked to the Top 20. Safety Jeffrey Okudah from South Grand Prairie (Texas) checks in at No. 17 and cornerback Shaun Wade from Trinity Christian (Jacksonville, Fla.) is at No. 19.
