YNN, Ind. – Union’s boys basketball team enjoyed its Friday night win in the Randolph County Tournament so much, the Rockets added a second one Saturday.
Roaring back from a 15-point halftime deficit, Union’s Rockets exploded for 25 points in the third quarter, forced overtime at the end of regulation, then made big play after big play to beat Union City 56-52 in overtime to advance to the scheduled Monday night championship game at Randolph Southern High School.
Earlier in the night session, the host Rebels had held off Monroe Central 48-45 to move to the girls championship
These results set up a weather-delayed final night on Monday with 13-1 Union meeting 11-4 Randolph Southern for the girls championship, followed by 6-3 Winchester against 3-7 Union for the boys title.
Yes, 3-7 Union.
The Rockets have doubled their season win total since 6 p.m. Friday night.
This time, seniors Saleem Malik (13 points), Kaulen Jenkins (12) and Stephen Winningham (12) all had big points down the stretch. Kyle Whitesel led Union City, now 6-5, with 16 points.
All three of the above Rockets hit free throws in overtime, as did Hunter Eviston and Max Carballo.
In the girls semifinal to start the night, Southern also won the game at the free-throw line, sinking 15 of 24 to hold off the Golden Bears (5-9).
Logan Saylor scored 14 points to lead the Rebels, while Morgan Acton netted 13.
The Union City boys and Monroe Central girls will both play Friday night at Monroe Central, as the two schools play a varsity girls/boys doubleheader.
