Cody Burton was the right batter at the right time for the Reynolds baseball team Tuesday night.
Burton’s walkoff single in the bottom of the eighth inning gave the Rockets their fourth consecutive win, a 1-0 shutout of Asheville High at Davis Field.
It was Burton’s only base hit in the extra-innings game. Together, the Rockets (8-6, 4-4) and Cougars (10-6, 4-4) only had eight combined hits.
Chad Treadway was 2-for-2 for Reynolds. Mars Hill recruit Jared Green had two strikeouts in an inning of scoreless, hitless relief to pick up the win after Kyle Cagle pitched seven innings of three-hit, three-walk ball. Cagle had 10 strikeouts.
Asheville also got a splendid start from its ace. Devin Mangum allowed just four hits and three walks in seven innings. He had eight strikeouts. Jared Pattterson, Tevin Salters and Neal Hutchins were 1-3 at the plate.
Reynolds’ win, coupled with Erwin’s victory over Enka (9-4, 4-4), creates a three-way tie for second place in the MAC 3-A division. Erwin (9-5, 4-3) is in first place.
