Ithaca High tennis players went 1-3 in their opening-round matches at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association championship tournament on Thursday at the Billie Jean King USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows.
The Little Red’s top two singles players, seniors Justin Milner and Kevin Huang, both were knocked into the consolation draw after opening with defeats.
Milner, who’s been battling ankle and elbow injuries this season, fell in three sets to Brady Berman of Long Island school Jericho, 1-6, 6-1 and 6-1. Milner went on to beat Darshan Rammohan of Highland (Section 9) in the consolation round, 6-3, 6-2, and will play in the consolation quarterfinals Friday morning.
Huang fell to Michael Kessler of Buffalo-area Williamsville North, 7-6 (7-2), 6-3, in the first round; Kessler then lost to No. 5 seed Felipe Osses-Konig, 6-2, 6-1.
The Little Red’s doubles team of Aidan Mackenzie and Michael Zhao lost in straight sets to the sixth seed, twins Brent and Garrett Boleslav of West Genesee, 6-2, 6-4. Mackenzie and Zhao won their consolation match later Thursday and will play in the consi quarterfinals on Friday.
Ithaca’s doubles twosome of juniors Steve Carman and Jonathan Gomes Selman was the Little Red’s lone first-round winner, as it swept past Jared Brunelle and Scott Kellett of Northern Adirondack, 6-0, 6-0. But the IHS duo was beaten in the round of 16 by second-seeded Sean Mullins and Patrick Hannity of Cold Spring Harbor, 6-2, 6-0, later Thursday.
Section 4’s other competitors, Michael Entry of Horseheads and the doubles twosome of cousins Alexander and Collin Stewart of Norwich, also went down to defeat in the opening round. Entry fell to fifth-seeded Jimmy Purdy of Bronxville, 6-1, 6-1, and the Stewarts fell to Fayetteville-Manlius’ Taran Judge and Chris Lansing, 6-0, 6-4.
The tournament runs through Saturday.
Track and field
Section 4 Class D Championships: On Wednesday at Marathon, the host Olympians’ boys and Seton Catholic Central’s girls were crowned team champions at the first of this week’s four sectional class championship meets. The classes A, B and C meets were scheduled for Thursday.
The Marathon boys scored 66 points to beat runner-up Cherry Valley-Springfield by 10 points and top the 29-team field. Olympians sprinter Daniel Harden was a quadruple-winner, taking the 100 (11.43 seconds) and 200 (23.02) meters, plus the long jump (22 feet, 1/2 inch) and the triple jump (43-111/2). Teammate Dylan Brickner won a close race in the 1,600, crossing the line in 4:43.66, just ahead of Bainbridge-Guilford’s Adam Bauerle (4:44.83).
In the girls’ meet, the victorious Saints scored 77 points to finish 15 better than runner-up Odessa-Montour. Seton got victories from Emily Gibson in the 400 meters (1:00.99) and the 1,600 relay team of Amanda Henkel, Jamie Farrell, Marlee Schaffer and Gibson (4:19.08).
