A lengthy bus ride to Roxbury proved well worth the trip for Southern, as the Rams upended the Gaels by a score of 7-1 on opening night.

Junior Jack Conrad – who had six goals all of the last season – led the way for the Rams with a hat trick effort on Sunday, while classmate Gavin Witt also had a three-point night with a goal of his own and two assists on tallies by senior Matt Scalvino and sophomore Paul Keyes, while sophomore David Lytle rounded out the scoring.

Hockey: Hawkins, Conrad, Keyes to earn Southern respect in 2015-16

Conrad opened the scoring at 2:42 of the opening period, before Scalvino extended the lead to 2-0 with under five minutes to play in first.

Conrad pushed the advantage to three goals at 6:14 of the second period, before Roxbury cut the deficit to 3-1 less than 10 seconds later, beating Cam Conrad for the only goal the he would allow, as the sophomore stopped 11 of 12 shots to earn the win.

Two more goals by Lytle and Witt gave Southern a 5-1 lead heading into the third, before Conrad notched his third of the night at 4:37 of the final frame, and Keyes put home his first of the year at 8:08 to cap the non-divisional victory.

Tommy Rossi and Hunter Bello each had a pair of assists in the win, while T.J. Hawkins, Nick Englebert, and Trent Markley all recorded helpers.

Up next: Southern plays host to Class A South foe Jackson Memorial on Wednesday, Dec. 2 at Winding River Rink in Toms River for a 7:30 p.m. puck drop.

The Ocean Ice Palace was the setting for a Brick Township offensive explosion on Sunday, as the Dragons blanked the Indians 10-0 on opening night.

Junior captain Michael Mooney led the way with three goals, while classmate J.T. Maloney and seniors Matt Strich and James Wiater each delivered two of their own.

Junior netminder Jake Lakatos was strong in the crease making 25 saves to record the shutout, as Brick out-shot Toms River South 33-25 in the Class A South matchup.

Stritch started the scoring at 3:21 of the opening period, before Mooney delivered his first of the year less than 30 seconds later, and assisted on a Maloney tally nine seconds after that.

Maloney assisted on Wiater’s first of the season with under five minutes to play in the first, while sophomore Noah Reiss notched the second goal of his varsity career at 13:08 of the period, and Mooney sent the Dragons into the second with a 6-0 lead on his second of the game.

Maloney and Wiater’s second goals of the night sandwiched Mooney’s hat trick tally in the first six minutes of the second period, while Stritch delivered his second to round out the Brick scoring in the third.

Wiater recorded three assists as part of his five-point night, while Reiss, Maloney, Kyle Oliveira, and Hunter Price each had two helpers.

Up next: Brick travels to Hunterdon Central at 6 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 4, while the Indians meet with Toms River North on Monday, Nov. 30 at 7:30 p.m.
