Katie Haitz remained unbeaten in her first year as a high school girls’ basketball head coach, and Simon Kenton’s 12-year winning streak in season-opening games is history after Ryle defeated the Pioneers, 51-48 on Thursday at Ryle.

The Raiders, ranked tied for third in The Enquirer coaches’ poll took the lead for good, 44-43, on Carly Lange’s pair of free throws with 3:01 to play.

Ryle (2-0) was led by senior guard Madison Jones’ 18 points. Jones scored 10 in the third quarter. Lange, an Indiana Wesleyan recruit, added 10 points for the Raiders.

Simon Kenton, 0-1 and ranked fifth, was led by Ally Niece’s game-high 26 points. Shelby Harmeyer, a transfer from Grant County, was next for the Pioneers with eight.

“Jones is a great defender, and she was great offensively tonight,” said Haitz, a former Boone Country assistant. “We had some great minutes off the bench tonight, too, with Carly Lange in foul trouble.”

Ryle beat Scott, 66-45 on the road in the opener.

Simon Kenton won last season’s meeting with Ryle, 57-28 at home, but the Raiders avenged it Thursday.

“I thought our teamwork was really good tonight,” Jones said. “I think we played really well.”
