Sacred Heart’s Leslie Bender has been named the National Girls’ Golf Coach of the Year by the National Federation of State High School Associations.
Bender led the Valkyries to their fourth straight state championship last fall. Over the past four seasons the team has posted 43 tournament championships and 13 second- or third-place finishes. Since Bender was named coach in 2006, 15 Sacred Heart golfers have gone on to play on the college level.
“She has been a role model for our athletic program and our golf team,” Sacred Heart athletic director Donna Moir said. “Her knowledge of the golf game, rapport with our student-athletes and her ability to develop golfers for college-level play has been incredible.”
