The district rivalry and their proximate geographical locations only heighten the drama when The Academy of The Sacred Heart and Westminster Christian meet annually in their Division V volleyball contests.
Throughout this regular season the two teams have compiled the best records in St. Landry Parish and both are undefeated in league play.
The teams play the first of their two district contests at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday beginning in the ASH gym.
In other key district games, Opelousas High plays at Beau Chene and Iota visits Northwest.
ASH (11-12), which has won the district title the last two seasons, is 11-12 following the Saints’ participation in a New Orleans tournament this past weekend.
The Saints played five games and finished 1-4.
ASH beat Haynes Academy and lost to St. Scholastica, Dominican, Assumption and Comeaux.
WCA under first-year head coach Kim Barber, has the best overall record in the parish (17-9).
The Crusaders were also involved in a weekend tournament and finished 2-2 after beating Highland Baptist (3-0) and Covenant Christian (2-0) then losing to Lafayette High and North Vermilion.
ASH is 2-0 in district games after defeating Northside Christian and Hamilton 3-0 in the two matches.
WCA is 1-0 with a 3-1 victory over Northside in a game played last Thursday.
The Saints are led by junior outside hitter Erin Mocker who had 181 entering the last two ASH matches.
Mockler’s attacking has been helped by three seniors — Miller Ezell, Taylor Boagni and Mary Virginia Guice.
Guice has 79 kills, while Ezell and Boagni have combined for 130.
Senior Maci Quebedeaux has provided 296 assists, while she, Ezell and Boagni have been the Saints’ top servers.
Barber inherited a team with only one starting senior (Blythe Thompson) who has been the team’s assist leader in most matches.
The Crusaders’ attack has been led by a core group of juniors who include Moriah Brooks, Neilee Newton and Ivy Cains.
Those three starters in addition to Thompson have been the team’s most consistent servers along with Hannah Fontenot and Stacia Newton.
Both teams are 0-1 in district games.
The two have also had difficulty sustaining overall wins.
Beau Chene has lost seven of the last eight games. Opelousas has lost four straight.
In district contests, Opelousas opened league play with a 3-1 loss to Carencro.
