Four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning propelled the Sandra Day O’Connor softball team to an 8-5 win over Boulder Creek.

Boulder Creek (13-6, 2-2) jumped out to a 3-2 lead after four innings, and O’Connor (20-4, 5-0) left a couple of runners stranded.

“It wasn’t that we were struggling in the early innings, we were just hitting the ball at people,” O’Connor head coach Melissa Hobson said. “We talked about being aggressive at the plate and I think that we did tha

In the bottom of the fourth, O’Connor began its rally. Second baseman Gavyn Gerardin blasted a one-run homer to left to tie the game at 3. Then later in the inning, a single from outfielder Savanna Avila scored pitcher Stevie McLemore to give O’Connor the 4-3 lead.

“I just went up there trying to hit it as hard as I could, to start something,” Gerardin said. “We like to stick together, get riled up, and get a rally going, and that’s what we did.”

In the fifth inning, O’Connor’s hot hitting continued. Hayley Busby, McLemore, Jamilia Cosay and Justyce McClaine all had RBIs, and O’Connor had an 8-3 lead.

Boulder Creek started to chip away at the lead in the top of the seventh. A single up the middle from first baseman Hilaria Stewart scored Maddie Daigneau, making it an 8-4 game. On the next pitch, catcher Aubrey Ledbetter singled to right field to score another run.

Left fielder Brice Phebus then came up to bat, representing the winning run, with two outs. O’Connor’s McLemore struck her out swinging to secure the win for her team.

“My team did everything right. They just came through with hits – timely hits,” Bolder Creek head coach Evah Taylor said. “We still walk away, even though we got defeated, with our heads up. We know we’re still a good team, and the day will come when we’ll get this team.”

Next up O’Connor will travel to Tempe to take on Corona Del Sol, while Boulder Creek will go to Surprise to face off against Valley Vista.
