Iowa high school sports practices are scheduled despite a state proposal setting Aug. 23 as the earliest possible starting date for classes.
Preseason practices will remain on the calendar for Aug. 10, said Alan Beste, executive director of the Iowa High School Athletic Association.
A legislative proposal sets the school calendar starting date as Aug. 23.
Beste said he spoke with officials from the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union Thursday. They determined the start of fall sports — football, volleyball, cross country, boys’ fall golf and girls’ swimming — will not change under proposed rules.
“There will be no changes with football or any of the other fall high school sports,” Beste said.
Beste added that the IHSAA establishes starting dates for football practices and schedules for all teams due to district football.
Football reclassification for the 2016 and 2017 will be completed after the 2015 season, he added.
