SUFFERN – In a game that featured two of the top Class AA teams in the section going 11 full innings, the play that ended it wasn’t even close.
Leading 2-1 with one out and Suffern hosting runners at the corners, North Rockland right fielder Madison Knipl (below, being hugged by head coach Jackie DiNuzzo) caught a fly ball and threw a frozen rope to the plate, where catcher Daniela Chiorazzi was waiting to apply the final tag and end a nearly three-hour saga.
Using the international tiebreaker rule to their benefit, the Red Raiders plated the winning run on an RBI double by Gina Selvaggi, who brought home Deangie Jimenez. According to the rule, once a game enters the 10th inning, each team will start the inning with a runner – the last player to bat out – on second base.
Suffern’s Sidney Padilla spoiled the Red Raiders’ fun in the previous inning, making a similar play to Knipl’s, only recording her assist from center field. The Mounties worked out of a first-and-third, no-out jam thanks to a heads up play by Ali Spinner on a grounder at third base and Padilla’s arm.
Both starters – North Rockland junior Kayla McDermott and Suffern junior Allie Wood – went the distance in a game that saw them combine for 359 pitches. McDermott, who tossed 176 pitches in the Red Raiders’ 10th consecutive win, struck out 18 batters. Wood fanned 10.
