Battle Creek Enquirer Prep Gameday scouting reports for the top city games in high school football:
BC Central (0-2) vs. Lakeview (1-1), 7 p.m. Friday
Scouting Report: Battle Creek Central’s hopes for a turnaround season and a spot in the playoffs for the first time since 2008 took a major blow last week with a loss to Benton Harbor – a team that was on a 20-game losing streak. The Bearcats have a losing streak of their own to end, falling to city-rival Lakeview the last four years and being outscored 146-7 in those games.
Great Gridder: Daireo Brown scored the lone touchdown for BCC in a loss to Benton Harbor.
Harper Creek (1-1) at Jackson Lumen Christi (2-0), 7 p.m. Friday
Scouting Report: The defending champs in the Interstate 8, Lumen Christi has started the season in dominating fashion, including a win over current Division 5 state champ Grand Rapids West Catholic. Four different running backs scored for Lumen Christi in a 38-14 win over Charlotte last week, including two by Josh Marsh. Harper Creek is looking to build off its first win of the season for first-year head coach Mike Seedorff.
Great Gridder: Caleb Hayes led Harper Creek in rushing in win over Jackson Northwest, including getting a touchdown.
Lakeview (1-1) at BC Central (0-2), 7 p.m. Friday
Scouting Report: Lakeview opens SMAC East Division play with game against city rival Battle Creek Central. Lakeview is two-time defending champ in the division and hasn’t lost in the East since 2012. The Spartans also own a four-game winning streak over Battle Creek Central. However, prior to that run, BCC had beaten Lakeview in nine of 10 seasons.
Great Gridder: Austin Cica, at defensive tackle, helped Lakeview hold down the Portage Central running game and had a key fumble recovery.
Pennfield (1-1) at Coldwater (2-0), 7 p.m. Friday
Scouting Report: Coldwater’s defense has been strong so far this season, not allowing double digits in either of its first two victories of the year. Coldwater is coming off a hard-fought 9-7 win over Marshall – as the Cardinals had a shutout last week until the Redhawks scored with nine seconds left in the game. Pennfield struggled with 11 penalties and three turnovers in a loss to Parma Western last week.
Great Gridder: Grant Peterson led Pennfield with 68 yards rushing and a touchdown in loss to Parma Western.
St. Philip (2-0) vs. Tekonsha (1-1), 7 p.m. Friday
Scouting Report: After a win in its opener, Tekonsha came close to a second victory in as many weeks, just falling short in a 34-32 loss to Webberville. St. Philip was off last week after Litchfield forfeited, meaning the Tigers haven’t played since its season opener on Aug. 28. St. Philip has shutout Tekonsha each of the last three years.
Great Gridder: St. Philip’s Trevor Searls is a four-year starter on defense and is the team’s leading tackler from a year ago.
