NEW ROCHELLE – Looks like that seeding miscue wasn’t too much of a factor.
North Rockland, stuck with a 5-seed in the Section 1 Class AA tournament due to a technicality, topped No. 4 New Rochelle in the quarterfinals Wednesday, 62-51.
The Red Raiders were supposed to be the 4-seed, but because of an issue with Long Island Lutheran’s record, North Rockland lost an extra bonus point and the additional potential home game.
Coaches Kevin Metcalf and Bruce Daniele were in agreement from the beginning that North Rockland should have been the higher seed and, according to Metcalf, Daniele spoke to both athletic directors and Section 1 executive director Jen Simmons and sent emails and texts saying that New Rochelle should be on the road, not the hosts.
North Rockland senior Ciera Rivera (pictured) scored her 1,000th point in the second quarter before finishing with 16 points. Fellow senior Olivia Burden led all scorers with 20 points. New Rochelle junior Kayla Correa led the Huguenots with 16 points, despite sitting a good chunk of time in the second half with foul trouble. Nicole Ziogas and Eliana Silk each added 10 points in the loss.
Ziogas was torrid out of the gate, burying three 3-pointers in the first quarter and prompting one fan to dub her, “Ms. Greenlight.”
