MIDDLEBURY – Lydia Maitland’s second-half goal was the difference as No. 3 Champlain Valley outlasted second-seeded Essex 1-0 in the Division I high school field hockey semifinals at Middlebury College on Tuesday night.
On a sequence that started with a penalty corner, Maitland took a feed from Anna Georgsdottir and deposited the winning goal with a one-timer at 17:54 of the second half.
CVU (11-3-2) will play No. 1 South Burlington (12-3-1) in Saturday’s Division I final at the University of Vermont.
Mady Corkum made eight saves for Essex. Tashia Pashby-Rockwood turned back six shots for CVU.
The Hornets (10-3-3) were chasing their third straight crown. Tuesday’s game was a rematch of last year’s final.
D-II BOYS SOCCER
•(1)Woodstock 3, (5) Harwood 1: Cody Carnehammar assisted the go-ahead goal and struck for the second-half insurance as host Woodstock topped Harwood to return to the D-II final for the second straight year.
Mason Thompson struck in the 18th minute for Woodstock (15-2).
After Harwood’s Shiv Seethepalli tied the game in the 29th minute, Woodstock regained it on Alex Crompton’s 42nd minute tally.
In the second half, Carnehammar blasted a long shot to seal it for the Wasps.
Harwood’s 12-game unbeaten streak came to end, finishing at 9-2-3.
• (6) U-32 3, (2) Lake Region 2: Ethan Scharf, called up from the JV squad for the playoffs, nodded in the game-winner with 14 seconds to play as U-32 rallied to knock off host Lake Region.
Ian Obeldobel scored the first two goals on assists from Noah Elmore as the Raiders (12-4-1) erased a two-goal deficit. Mackinley Shaffer finished with six saves for U-32.
Matt Lawlor and Riley Urie struck for the Rangers (16-1) and Liam Kennedy turned away six shots.
D-II BOYS SOCCER
•(1) Twin Valley 5, (5) Leland & Gray 1: Justin Hicks tallied host Twin Valley’s first three goals, a hat trick that propeled the Wildcats past Leland & Gray.
Hicks also assisted Baylee Crawford and Nick Nilson, while Kyle Murdock finished with four saves for the Wildcats (15-1-1).
Sergei Brower’s 36th-minute goal for the Rebels made it a 2-1 game at the break. Nick Morrow turned away 14 shots.
D-IV BOYS SOCCER
•(9) Arlington 2, (4) West Rutland 1: Colin Lawler struck with 2:47 left in double overtime to lift Arlington past West Rutland.
The Eagles, down by one at halftime after allowing an own goal in the 37th minute, equalized with 14 minutes to go when Jared Lacoste buried the rebound after Nate Mattison’s long-distance effort hit the crossbar.
Arlington improves to 8-8-1. West Rutland finishes 10-6-1.
•(2) Proctor 1, (6) Sharon 0: Eli Akin’s first-half goal was enough for Proctor to defeat Sharon.
Proctor advances to its 24th finals apperance in program history.
D-I GIRLS SOCCER
•(1) Burr and Burton 4, (5) Rutland 1: After Rutland tied the game 1-all midway through the first half, host Burr and Burton responded with three unanswered tallies to book a spot in the state final.
Hanna Pinkus, Maggie Sullivan, Bella Dworkin (assist) and Olivia Watanabe each found the back of the net for the Bulldogs (17-0) and Aggie Bisselle had two assists. Dworkin’s strike, a second before halftime, made it a 3-1 game at the break.
Jordan DelBianco netted the Raiders’ first-half equalizer.
