Several Shore swimmers qualify for MOC finals on Sunday

The championship defense for St. Rose senior Casey Lawson will continue into the second and final day of the NJSIAA swimming Meet of Champions.

Lawson, who won the Meet of Champions title in the 200 freestyle in 2014, was determined to have a chance to defend that state title on Saturday morning at the Gloucester County Institute of Technology.

“That is exactly what I wanted to do,” Lawson said. “I was trying to do my best but I just wanted to make it into the top eight .”

Lawson swam 1:52.20 to finish third in the preliminary round of the 200 freestyle on Saturday morning and last year she was fifth in the preliminary round with a time of 1:52.43. Her top competitors for Sunday’s championship final appear to be preliminary round winner Ocean City freshman Amanda Nunan (1:49.73) and preliminary round second-place finisher Haddonfield junior Sophie Fontaine.

The girls swimming MOC finals will begin at 10 a.m. Sunday at the Gloucester County Institute of Technology in Sewell.

“When you come to the Meet of Champions there are so many people that I’ve never really had an opportunity to race before,” Lawson said. “So, it is another level of fast competition and Sunday’s race should be exciting.”

Lawson won’t be the only Shore Conference girls swimmer in contention for a state title.

Wall senior Danielle Griggs won the 50 free preliminary round with a time of 23.67 and the 100 free preliminary with a time of 51.72. She was the only double-event winner on the girls side on Saturday. The meet record in the 50 free is 23.00 set by Westfield’s Caroline Baldwin in 2014 and the meet record in the 100 free is 49.79 set by Rancocas Valley’s Kelsi Worrell in 2012. So, both meet records are within Griggs’ reach on Sunday.

Other Shore Conference girls swimmers that qualified for Sunday’s championship finals were as followed: Shore Regional junior Helen Grossman qualified in the 100 butterfly with a fourth place finish time of 56.38; Trinity Hall sophomore Caroline Gmelich was eighth in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:09.40 and fifth in the 100 backstroke with a time of 57.36.

Rumson-Fair Haven junior Sid Farber, St. Rose sophomore Liam Cosgrove and Point Boro junior Joe Skimmons secured their invitation to the NJSIAA Meet of Champions Finals on Sunday after impressive performances in the preliminary round on Saturday afternoon at the Gloucester County Institute of Technology in Sewell.

Farber qualified for two MOC finals via his fifth-place finish in the 50 freestyle (21.70) and eighth-place finish in the 100 freestyle (47.52). In addition, St. Rose’s Cosgrove also qualified in two events (the 100 butterfly and the 100 backstroke). Cosgrove placed fifth in the 100 butterfly (51.06) and seventh in the 100 backstroke (52.16).

The most intriguing subplot to Sunday’s 2 p.m. start of the MOC Finals is the 100 breaststroke showdown between Toms River South senior Jacob Limaldi, who qualified with a fourth-place finish (57.37), and Skimmons, who qualified with a fifth-place finish (57.65).

Limaldi has beaten Skimmons head-to-head at the Ocean County Championships and at the Shore Conference Championships in the 100 breaststroke event this high school swimming season. Sunday will be their last high school race against each other. Skimmons also qualified in the 200 individual medley with an eighth-place finish (1:54.66). So, it will be Skimmons, Farber and Cosgrove as the Shore Conference’s two-championship event participants on Sunday.

The other boys swimmer that secured a spot in Sunday’s championship finals was Toms River East senior Dan Betts in the 200 freestyle (third, 1:42.50).
