Charity hockey game
Birmingham Unified Hockey has announced it will support The Matthew Bittker Foundation, a program started by the Bittker family to support critically needed research for neuroblastoma, which claimed their son Matthew in 2007.
The BU varsity Kings will play a charity fundraiser game at 5:30 p.m. Jan. 17 against Davison at the Birmingham Ice Arena with T-shirt and apparel sales. The BU junior varsity game against longtime rival Bloomfield Hills follows at approximately 8 p.m.
All proceeds will directly benefit The Matthew Bittker Foundation, a 501(c)3 charity to which donations made are tax-deductible.
“The Bittkers are part of the BU family and our support of The Matthew Bittker Foundation is part of our players’ and our system’s commitment to the community,” said John Graham, president of the BU Booster hockey board.
T-shirts and other apparel will go on sale before the game and can also be purchased from BU JV and varsity players. Free admission with apparel purchase.
Every ticket purchased is entered for a raffle to win a new iPad. Additional raffle tickets will be available for sale
Belf earns Gatorade honor
Birmingham Seaholm’s outstanding long distance runner Audrey Belf has earned another honor.
It was announced this week that the senior was named Michigan’s Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year by Gatorade. The prestigious award was established in 1985 to honor America’s elite high school student-athletes.
Gatorade recognized Belf for her “athletic excellence, academic achievement and exemplary character on the field, in the classroom and off the field.” Some of the country’s most outstanding athletes have received this honor over the past 30 years, including pro football players Peyton Manning and Emmitt Smith, pro basketball star LeBron James and women’s soccer standout Abby Wambach.
Belf captured her second straight individual Division 1 girls cross country title last fall. The Georgetown University-bound Belf recently placed seventh at the national Foot Locker Cross Country Championships. She was also named to the academic all-state team.
