Silver Creek rolls to rout of North Harrison on Veterans Recognition Night

Duty and Honor carried the day for Silver Creek, as the Dragons throttled the visiting North Harrison Cougars on Friday 68-39 on Veterans Recognition Night.

The players wore special uniforms sponsored by the Indiana National Guard, and each player wore a different word on the front of his jersey. Christian Reed (Duty) scored a game-high 21 points with seven rebounds. Alex Long (Honor) added 14 points and 12 rebounds. The Dragons improved to 5-0. The Cougars fell to 3-1.

“It was a great night to be a Dragon,” coach Brandon Hoffman said. “With the military theme we had and everything, our team played about as good as we can play at this time of year.”

Silver Creek didn’t allow North Harrison to score the first four minutes, jumping out to an 8-0 lead. The Dragons scored the final 10 points of the period to lead 20-4. Ryan Baker (five points) hit one 3-pointer during that run, but the rest of it featured a steady diet of Reed and Long pounding it inside for layups and free throws.

“The whole night was honoring the military, which is the best team, so we wanted to be the best team out on the court tonight,” said Reed, who scored 15 of his points in the first half. “I worked all summer long on going to the basket physically, and once I get on a roll like that I feel like I’m able to muscle through and get what I want.”

Reed outscored the Cougars in the first half, 15-14. His last points came early in the third period to put the Dragons up 46-18. And when he wasn’t willing the ball into the basket, Long was there to complement him inside.

“Christian dominated,” said Hoffman. “They were sending a lot of guys at him. Double teams. Triple teams. He passed out of those for layups. Everyone else on the court was playing checkers, and he was playing chess, it seemed like. Alex Long dominated as well. He had eight first half rebounds. He was relentless on the boards and got rewarded for it tonight.”

Alex Long and Jake Troxell led the Cougars in scoring with 11 points each.
