ST. GEORGE Snow Canyon wrestlers put on a show against the Dixie Flyers with the ol’ cross face, far ankle.
SC head coach Nick Lang said he wanted to see his wrestlers get back to the basics, and that’s what paid off for them in the end.
“Today was Throwback Thursday,” Lang said. “They got back to the fundaments, and I tell them all the time that they don’t need to do fancy moves to win.”
The Warriors spent the whole night breaking down Flyers with the cross face, far ankle to rack up the points with near falls, which led to pins in some cases.
Snow Canyon’s Hunter Wood, a sophomore, capped the lopsided evening with a victory in the 220 weight class — his first varsity match of the season. The referee awarded two points to Dixie’s Nate Cox after an illegal headlock by Wood, but the match shifted.
“I wore him down in the first period,” Wood said. “Then in the second period he was more tired.”
Wood finally got his arm across Cox’s face and reached for the leg to flip him over. That’s all it took to get a second-period pin and wrap up a big-time duel meet win for Snow Canyon.
“I gave it all I got to get him to the ground and pin him,” Wood said. “Since this is my first varsity match at Snow Canyon, I feel like I can progress a lot more — more improvement and more wins.”
Wood has sights set on qualifying for state even as a newcomer to the varsity scene this late in the season.
Outside of forfeits, Dixie’s lone win came from Hobbs Nyberg in the 126 weight class. Snow Canyon’s Christian Chase held a 5-4 lead going into the third period after two-point and three-point near falls.
Nyberg escaped from under Chase and immediately fired back with a single-leg takedown. He held on the rest of the period for a 7-5 win.
After that, though, the Warriors cruised. Trent Wilson pinned Dixie’s Gary Wright with a half nelson in 132, and Weston Jeppson defeated Jason Longmore on a 10-0 decision.
Rounding out the night at Snow Canyon High School, Tanner Wilde pinned Dixie’s Marco Delgado in 113, Jake Riley (SC) won by decision 10-0 over Emilio Gutierrez (Dixie) in 145, Caleb Wambach (SC) beat Tanner Emerson (Dixie) by decision in 152, Levi Bishop (SC) pinned Byron Anderson (Dixie) in 160 and Chris Stoddard (SC) pinned Kolten Hansen (Dixie) in 182.
