Jaimie Harney had three hits, three RBI and two runs scored as the third-seeded and host softball team from John Jay High School beat 14th-seeded Mahopac 8-2 on Thursday in the first round of the Section 1 Class AA tournament.
“The girls were so focused, pumped and energetic to be on the field,” said John Jay coach Michael Crocco, whose team improved to 17-4. The defending Section 1 Class AA champion Patriots will host sixth-seeded Suffern at 11 a.m. Saturday in a quarterfinal in Wiccopee. “Suffern’s a really good team that can beat anybody. We need to be focused, be ready to play, and hopefully the numbers fall in our favor.”
Kellie Raccosta struck out five and walked two, allowing two earned runs and five hits over seven innings for John Jay. Sam Fitzgerald had three hits and two RBI. With John Jay ahead 6-2 in the sixth inning, Harney doubled, Stephanie Stumm doubled her in and Tori Dixon doubled Stumm in. Erika Flemmig added two hits.
