ROSENDALE – Kayla Schwebke was nearly unhittable Tuesday evening. Unfortunately for the Laconia softball team, ‘nearly’ didn’t cut it.
Brooke Scott hit a solo home run in the fourth inning as North Fond du Lac upset Laconia 1-0 in Flyway Conference action at William N. Taylor Park in Rosendale — ruining a superb performance in the circle from Schwebke and handing the Spartans their first loss of the season.
“She’s a senior on our team, she’s a captain and she’s a leader,” North Fond du Lac coach Kim Orlebeke said of Scott. “I absolutely expect that out of her, as I do of any of the girls. Brooke’s really been able to come through with some huge hits this year. Any time we’ve needed her, she’s usually the one that pulls through.”
Janice Schwersinske earned the shutout for North Fond du Lac (3-6, 1-3 Flyway), allowing just four hits while striking out eight. Schwersinske only ran into trouble a couple of times on Tuesday against a potent Spartans lineup.
In the second inning, Payton Kastenschmidt led off with a single and advanced to second on an error, but was thrown out attempting to steal third. Loryn Strook then followed with a double for Laconia (10-1, 4-1 Flyway), which would have scored Kastenschmidt. Schwersinske also allowed two hits with one out in the fourth, but retired the next two batters on popouts.
Laconia didn’t record a hit after the fourth inning.
“We had to kind of keep it together through the snow and the sleet and we just kind of did our thing, I guess,” Schwersinske said.
As Schwersinske alluded to, Tuesday’s game was played in downright cold conditions, with snow flurries popping up throughout. The entire seventh inning featured gusting winds and a combination of snow and sleet.
Scott’s home run, which went to deep right-center field, ultimately gave Schwebke the loss — one which the sophomore didn’t deserve. Schwebke allowed just two hits and struck out 19 as the Orioles had almost no answers for her at the plate.
Schwebke actually struck out the first six batters of the game and had retired 10 in a row before Scott finally got ahold of one. Schwersinske provided the other Orioles hit on Tuesday, smashing a line drive up the middle in the sixth.
Although just one regular-season win, Tuesday’s victory should give the Orioles confidence as the season goes along and proves they’re capable of playing with anyone.
“Like I told the girls after the game, we’re capable of this all the time, this type of play,” Orlebeke said. “We’ve been playing some really strong games, some really tight games and every once in a while we have a meltdown. For us, just to get it together and keep it together is our goal for the season.”
