* DeSales 63, Fairdale 55: In the first major action of his varsity career, sophomore reserve Jaxon Burgess scored 18 points to lead the Colts (14-3) past the Bulldogs (7-8).
DeSales coach Tom Crews said Burgess mostly has played on the junior-varsity team this year but was moved up to give the varsity program a scoring boost.
“He’s a scoring machine,” Crews said. “I mean, wow! What a debut to have that kind of game in a tight game that mattered. … If it wasn’t for him, we wouldn’t have won.”
The Colts struggled from 3-point range (4 of 20), but Burgess hit 3 of 5 attempts.
“I really didn’t think I was going to get to play, but Coach said my name and I came off the bench,” Burgess said. “I was excited to play and came out and did what I do best.”
Shaun Sullivan (17 points) and Chase Shellman (16 points, nine rebounds) also had big nights as DeSales advanced to face the Doss-Waggener winner in Friday’s 4 p.m. quarterfinal.
Tre Richardson had 20 points and eight rebounds to lead Fairdale, which finished 12 of 28 from the free-throw line (42.9 percent). Freshman Glenn Queen added 16 points but hit just 6 of 16 free throws.
Queen’s jumper pulled Fairdale within 53-51 with 1:41 left, but DeSales answered with a 6-1 run. Burgess’ 3-point play with 42.5 seconds left capped the surge and gave the Colts a 59-52 lead.
