Section 4 athletes would appear well-positioned to make a splash in an array of events in New York’s track & field championship meet Friday and Saturday at University at Albany.
While competition is broken down according to enrollment — Division I (600 and up) and Division II — a handful from the Southern Tier figure to be in line for top honors overall.
In a race scheduled to begin a bit before noon Saturday, Union-Endicott’s Emily Mackay and Ithaca’s Lauren Trumble will have a go at the 1,500-meter championship. Mackay is seeded second (4:30.87) and Trumble third (4:32.96), with Anna Flynn of Ursuline up top at 4:30.53. Mackay placed fifth as a sophomore in last year’s states, six places ahead of Flynn.
Flynn will be coming off a Friday-night 3,000 in which she is the top seed at 9:44.59 to a 9:45.57 for No. 2 Abbey Wheeler of Elmira.
Maine-Endwell junior Michael Palmer is No. 4 overall and No. 1 among Division II pentathletes— the lone underclassmen among the top eight on the seed list. He intends to apply valuable lessons absorbed during last week’s State Qualifier.
“You’ve got to be focused for the entire time,” he said. “You really can’t be lackadaisical at any point during the meet because you do that in one event — as I found out in the high jump — it won’t go well and you’ll lose a lot of points.”
Binghamton’s Alexis Daniels is seeded second overall behind Mariah Mays of Rome for the two events in which she holds Section 4 records, the shot put and discus. Shot put supremacy this weekend would make for an indoor/outdoor double for Daniels, who placed first to Mays’ fourth in March at Cornell University.
Mike Beebe of Windsor heads the field of Division II high jumpers on the strength of a 6-feet, 6-inch effort. That leaves him fourth overall, with sophomore and indoor runner-up Daniel Claxton of Smithtown East No. 1. Max Jordan of Lansing and Josh Mastrantuono of Waverly will commence pole vaulting as the 1-2 in D-II.
In fact, Lansing has a shot at a guy-girl double in the pole vault, with sophomore Emily Gallagher top-seeded in D-II.
Maine-Endwell’s Dan Schaffer ran third among D-II 3,200-meter runners at last year’s outdoor states, and enters Friday night’s race No. 2 in his division. In the chase for a top overall finish in that race will be Carthage sophomore Noah Affolder, winner of last month’s Parkhurst Invitational 1,600 in which Schaffer ran second.
Schaffer will also have a go at the 1,600, for which he and Susquehanna Valley’s Richard Buchanan figure into medal contention. Buchanan, fresh off a personal-best 4:18.62, will look to improve upon his fourth-place D-II finish of last spring.
“I know I can place small-school because that’s what I did last year. I’m hoping top three this year but time is more important to me. I want to go under 4:17,” Buchanan said.
Versatile junior Daniel Harden of Marathon heads to the state capital for an ambitious undertaking. Among Division II athletes, he is seeded third in the 400 and long jump, and fifth in the triple jump.
Newark Valley sophomore Courtney McNeil factors greatly into the D-II sprints, with top-five billing in the 100- and 200-meter dashes.
Competition begins at 11:30 a.m. Friday with the girls’ discus, with action on the track to start at 12:30. Day 2 is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. on the track and in the field. Admission is $8.
