Marvin Bagley III could wind up playing basketball again for Tempe Corona del Sol.
A source confirmed Monday that Bagley’s family has made inquiries about re-enrolling at Corona following his departure from Hillcrest Basketball Academy last week.
Bagley, the No. 1 ranked recruit in the 2018 class, played for Corona’s state championship team last year as a freshman before leaving for Hillcrest.
It’s unclear how far along the Bagleys are in their conversations with Corona.
Also uncertain is whether the Arizona Interscholastic Association would grant Bagley III a hardship waiver to play this season. Bagley played several games with Hillcrest against junior college teams.
Update: AIA executive director Harold Slemmer said Monday afternoon that he hasn’t heard from Corona del Sol or the Tempe Union High School District regarding a hardship waiver for Bagley. Slemmer said that if Bagley enrolls at Corona the school could ask to meet with the AIA at its Dec. 7 executive board meeting.
Slemmer said he’s also uncertain how the games Bagley already has played for Hillcrest would weigh into the potential decision.
Corona del Sol’s season begins on Dec. 1 against Mesa.
