TOMS RIVER – The South Brunswick girls track team wanted to get back on top and accomplished their goal with a strong showing from their sprint team.
South Brunswick defeated Monroe 72-34 to win the GMC County Relays at the Bennett Center in Toms River on Saturday.
Seniors Rochell McDonald and Aspen McMillan explained that they knew that had to come out and make a statement, feeling they were in a new mindset after losing at the event in the two previous years. South Brunswick won six straight times at the event before then.
“We knew that we were the underdogs and we wanted to prove that we still had it. Especially with the freshmen coming in. We tried to prove our point coming back in these races. We have a history of winning GMC’s so we wanted to bring that back,” said McMillan.
McDonald added, “We wanted to bring it back and I feel like our underclassmen can continue that next year. So we have to set the example and start it this year before we graduate.”
McDonald and McMillan helped South Brunswick take the 4×200 and the 4×200. The Vikings also placed first in the sprint medley and second in the 4×800 to round out the event.
“For the four by four, we really just had to pull together and push through our race,” said McMillan. “We knew that we were in the lead and we didn’t want to take it for granted so we pushed through to get the big win.”
Coach Stefan Moorhead agreed with his runners that they had some work to do and was glad to see them come out on top, which is somewhere they expect to be.
“We just missed out on winning last year and we had a nice streak so that was disappointing. We just wanted to show that it was more the exception than the rule,” said Moorhead. “We wanted to maintain our consistency of winning titles and I’m happy with the way we performed tonight.”
Moorhead also thinks this is the springboard for the rest of the year. It only gets tougher.
“This is the beginning of the championship cycle. Every week from now on, we have a championship meet so it was important to get a win tonight to build some momentum going into the meets. I think we have the potential to do very well,” said Moorhead.
