South Gibson’s Sam Wehner and Dresden’s Anna Johnson were individual winners in Thursday’s Region 7A-AA cross country meet hosted by Obion County Central High School.
Those individuals also pushed their squads to team wins, as the Hornet boys and Lady Lions finished first.
Boys’ teams qualifying for the Nov. 7 state meet at Nashville’s Percy Warner Park were South Gibson, runner-up Crockett County and third-place Westview. Girls’ teams qualifying included Dresden, runner-up South Gibson and third-place Fayette-Ware.
Wehner continued a big fall semester with a winning time of 16 minutes, 29 seconds in Thursday’s race. He finished ahead of Crockett County’s Jerry Rojas, another regularly top contender in West Tennessee.
Wehner and Rojas will look to improve upon their seventh- and eighth-place finishes last year at the state meet, respectively, at this year’s event. Wehner completed the state race in 17:03 and Rojas in 17:09 last year.
Dresden’s Donovan Davis was third, followed by South Gibson’s Nathan Hicks and Isaac Wehner. Crockett County’s Edwin Antunez was sixth, South Gibson’s Alex Gardner ran seventh, Dresden’s Donovan Sawyer and Chase Carden finished eighth and ninth and Crockett County’s Patrick Sparks was 10th.
Johnson won the girls’ race with a time of 19 minutes, 47 seconds to qualify for state for the first time.
Dresden freshman Loral Winn was second behind her teammate Johnson. South Gibson’s Leah Spahr and Crockett County’s Robyn Evans were third and fourth, and Westview’s Selam Getanch was fifth.
Obion County Central’s Katelyn Smith finished sixth and Gibson County’s Jaci White was seventh. The next three qualifiers were Dyersburg’s Banita Simmons, Dresden’s Rachel Cravens and Dyersburg’s Aloysius White.
