A season that began with a nationally televised upset of preseason No. 1 De La Salle ended sooner than the Euless Trinity football team hoped.
Jose Cruz made a 32-yard field goal with no time remaining to give South Grand Prairie a 24-21 victory against No. 3 Trinity in the first round of the playoffs.
Ja’Ron Wilson had scored 2:47 earlier on a 1-yard run to tie the game at 21-21.
SGP (7-4) took over at its own 45-yard line and ran off nine plays to move the ball to the Trinity 15 before Cruz won the game to send SGP to the next round.
Trinity (10-1) had taken a 14-0 lead in the game first eight-plus minutes on a pair of rushing touchdowns. The Warriors answered back in the second quarter with two TDs and then opened the third quarter with a Ronnie Allen 1-yard reception to take a 21-14 lead.
Trinity outgained SGP 351-286 and won the turnover battle but could not win on the scoreboard. Warriors QB Greg Ellsworth ran 17 times for 113 yards and threw for 90 on 8 of 11 with two touchdowns.
Trinity had a pair of 100-yard rushers in DeJaun Garrett with 143 and a TD and Wilson with 107 and two TDs.
