UNION (Union) – When South Plainfield football players John Chillemi, Kyle Dickerson and Xavier Wilson were chosen to play in the Mycentraljersey.com Snapple Bowl XXII, it was the first time three Tigers had been selected.
“It’s the first time we’ve had three kids and they’re all well deserving, they’re all very good players,” South Plainfield coach Gary Cassio said. “They’re all going to work and represent our school really well. They’re three of the best players we’ve had in South Plainfield in a long time and I’m proud all three are going to represent our school and our town.”
All three players helped the Middlesex County All-Stars to a 33-13 victory over the Union County All-Stars on Thursday night at Kean University. It was the fourth-straight victory for the Middlesex squad.
“John in my opinion is the best defensive player in the county,” Cassio said. “Kyle is one of the most versatile players, he can play defensive back, receiver, running back and Xavier is just a good kid and a hard worker.”
Chillemi, an outside linebacker, had three tackles and Dickerson, a cornerback, registered a tackle on defense.
Dickerson also recovered a fumble with 13:23 left in the second quarter immediately following a Union punt which set up Spotswood’s Chase Fee’s second touchdown of the first half.
“That was awesome, I just put it away for everybody,” Dickerson said. “Getting up early it really helps in the long run especially with these long games, it’s a whole other quarter we’re playing.”
Chillemi and Dickerson helped the Middlesex defense hold Union to 215 yards of total offense and two touchdowns.
Wilson helped anchor a Middlesex offense that totaled 294 yards on offense, three touchdowns, a safety and 33 points.
“Personally I feel confident, as a unit I feel that we know what we’re doing, we’re executing our blocks correctly and the score is showing that,” Wilson said.
Since it’s inception in 1994 the Snapple Bowl has raised over $485,000 benefitting the Children’s Specialized Hospital and the Lakeview School, a program of the New Jersey Institute for Disabilities.
