The Sparta wrestling program was down for many years but has staged a wrestling revival.
The Spartans, who reached the NJSIAA North 1 Group III final, are the Daily Record’s pick to come away with the District 3 team championship.
Jefferson’s Luke Bohn, who won a district title and reached the state tournament in Atlantic City last year, is the choice to win another District 3 championship. Bohn, who made the states last year at 160 and wrestled all season at that weight, will make the move to 170 for the postseason.
Here is a look at District 3, which will be held at Kittatinny beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday.
Last year: Jefferson’s Bryan Damon (120) and Luke Bohn (152) won individual titles. High Point ended Kittatinny’s two-year run as district champions.
Returning champions (last year’s weight in parenthesis): Garrett Gerndt, Sparta (106), Austin Scrivani, Kittatinny (132), Ian Burke, Sparta (138), Jason Gaccione, High Point (145), Luke Bohn, Jefferson (152), Gus Protogeropoulos, Newton (220).
Best weight class: High Point’s Jason Gaccione and Sparta’s Ian Burke, should they each reach the 145-pound final, should be quite a battle. And the presence of Kittatinny’s talented Jake Van Wingerden makes this a deep weight.

285—1. Robbie Gennat (Sparta); 2. Tyler Pittenger (Newton); 3. Henry Kuperus (High (Point).
Team— Look for Sparta to come away with the team title in a tight one over High Point and Kittatinny. The Wildcats and Cougars are in the midst of rebuilding seasons but are always a threat in team settings.
