MARSHFIELD — Farid Torbey scored two goals to help the Dons defeat the Cardinals 3-1 at Greise Park on Saturday afternoon. Charles Payant also added a goal to help the Dons win the Division 4 regional final matchup.
The Dons advanced and will host Aquinas at 4 p.m. Thursday at Greise Park.
“Sectional semi opponent Aquinas plays a lot of D-2 and D-3 teams,” Columbus Catholic coach Jeff Edwards said. “Their record may not reflect it, but they are a good team. We’re going to have our hands full.”
The Cardinals were able to grab the lead when Mathias Kroening sent one through the back of the net at the end of the first half, but it was the Dons who came away with the victory after 3 second-half goals.
The Dons outshot the Cardinals 9-5 on goal and also held a 13-2 advantage on corner kicks.
“It was a great game, a tale of two halves with the wind,” Edwards said. “It’s always tough to play a team three times. The kids handled it really well. Pacelli had a good team this year. I wasn’t looking forward to playing them a third time.”
Pacelli keeper Chris Jensen kept the Cardinals in the game by saving 6 shots, but the Dons offense was relentless
“Columbus Catholic is a very good squad,” said Pacelli coach Jarrod Schlicter. “Very, very good defense. There’s a reason they’re a number 1 seed. To get a goal on them, I was very excited about that. We’ve got a very young squad. We’ll have a lot of returning players who gained a lot of experience this year. I’m excited about the future.”
