Kyle Trevas became excited in recent years about the thought of running a varsity basketball team and high school program as a coach, after nearly a decade on the staff at Irondequoit.

Trevas, 32, has that opportunity in Spencerport.

The board of education in Spencerport approved Trevas as the district’s varsity boys basketball coach Tuesday night. This is his first head varsity coaching position, after nine years at Irondequoit, coached by Chris Cardon.

“I played there too, so I played for coach (Cardon),” Trevas said. “I’m definitely willing to take on that challenge, to build unity in the program.”

Spencerport finished 4-15 this past season. Trevas replaced Chris Crowell as Spencerport’s coach.

“Whether the kids play one, two or three sports, they still get into the gym,” Cardon said. “We have a lot of dedicated people. A lot of it starts with Kyle.

“He did so much. He’s a workaholic and amazing.”

Trevas, a 2001 Irondequoit graduate, played point guard on teams that included All-Greater Rochester players Gabe Marshall and Jonathan Williams. A graduate of the College at Brockport, Trevas is single, with no children.

“I’m pretty excited,” Trevas said. “The past two years, I’ve really had that itch.”
