The second round of the Inter Club Tournament set the table for a wild finish in the third round.
St. Clair maintained its lead after the best ball round at Port Huron Elks, holding on to 42.5 points. Port Huron is in second place with 35.5 points while Elks — the winners of the last five Inter Clubs — has 30.
While it’s a dog fight atop the leaderboard, today is when chaos enters the course. The first two rounds had 54 points up for grabs as they were team rounds. The third and final round at Port Huron Golf Club will be individual match play, so 108 points will be for the taking.
“You just have to take it one match at a time and play it till the end,” said Elks’ Dan Bowman, who picked up 2.5 points with Bobby McKillop.
There’s no telling what will happen in the wide open final round, but one storyline is certain — Port Huron’s golfers will be happy with the home course advantage on the last day.
“Obviously it’s an advantage coming to our course on the last day, but I wouldn’t say it’s a benefit,” said Port Huron’s Dave Koschnitzke, who swept up three points with Larry Beck.
The second round started on a bit of a delay thanks to a cameo by Mother Nature, but golfers agreed the rain didn’t change the course conditions all that much. One golfer who loved the way the course played was St. Clair’s Cesar Motis, who swept up three points with his partner Ed Nadolski.
Motis has only been a part of the club for a handful of weeks now, but is excited about the opportunity of snapping the Elks’ impressive win streak.
“From what I understand, we have a long drought,” Motis said.
“It’s exciting, and I’m glad to be a part of it competing.”
