St. Edith’s varsity volleyball team elevated to heights never reached before at the Livonia Catholic school as the Eagles spiked home the first-ever Catholic Youth Organization title in their sport.
The Eagles, who consist entirely of eighth-graders, were toughened up during a demanding regular-season divisional schedule that consisted of games against juggernauts St. James, Our Lady of Victory and St. Williams.
St. Edith out-lasted a very talented St. James squad in the semifinals, before advancing to the finals match on Oct. 22 at Ladywood High School.
The Eagles rose to the occasion as they defeated St. Hugo in three games to etch their names in the school’s history books.
The Ladywood gymnasium was charged up for the final match as the stands were jam-packed with current and former St. Edith athletes, coaches and parish members.
Feeding off the support, the Eagles turned in their most-complete effort of the season. The champions finished with a near-perfect 14-1 record.
The team’s roster consists of eighth-graders Kourney Klatt, Meagan Cahill, Reese Wilson, Sedona Coon, Julia Maahs, and Sarah Dunn. The team was led by captains Erin Pietruszka and Jessie Mruzik.
