When Cathedral High School in Mississippi decided to jump from the MHSAA to the Mississippi Association of Independent Schools this season, it left St. Frederick coach Jeff Tannehill with a week one headache.
Tannehill was forced to put together another opponent less than a month before the start of the season.
Arkansas 3A school Drew Central High School from Monticello, Arkansas agreed to come to Monroe for the first game. The Warriors will host the Pirates at 7 p.m. this Friday at Chip Luffey Field.
While the entire St. Frederick team was caught off guard by the schedule change, it is the Warrior offense that hopes to turn some heads this season themselves.
It all starts this Friday and it starts with junior quarterback Barrett Coon.
Coon has been hard at work over the summer with his passing game and foot work — areas coaches felt he could improve the most to help the team win. St. Frederick is two years removed from finishing as state runner-up in Division IV.
“He is a leader,” Tannehill said. “He has really gotten back to the basics and has become a real student of the game. He is more of a running quarterback. It was about getting him more comfortable in the pocket and a better grasp of the passing game.”
Coon admits he is excited at the possibilities of the coming season.
“I feel a lot more comfortable,” Coon said of his progression from first-year starter to veteran playmaker. “I think we can surprise people with our different throws. I am definitely more comfortable in the pocket.”
Another factor in the progression of the passing game is the pass protection which is coming from a veteran offensive line returning four players with experience on Friday nights.
“We have three or four guys that understand our offense and the line is getting better and better,” Tannehill said.
With only film of a scrimmage from Drew Central because Arkansas does not play jamborees, the Warriors are going to be going with the flow this week.
“We will adjust as they game goes,” Tannehill said. “We just have to go out and execute.”
