The St. Frederick football team took its lumps last week in a 41-7 loss to Sterlington. And things do not get any easier – just moved to the air instead of on the ground – when the Loyola Prep Flyers come to Chip Luffey Field on Friday at 7 p.m.
Sterlington, known for a bruising running game, stands in contrast to Loyola (1-1) and the passing air raid the Flyers are known for under the direction of offensive coordinator Steven Geter.
Geter was offensive coordinator at Class 2A powerhouse Evangel Christian Academy in Shreveport the past two seasons. He previously served as Loyola head coach from 2008-2012. At every stop, Geter has been well known for producing highly successful passing attacks.
Loyola quarterback Bishop George has passed for 376 yards and three touchdowns in two games.
“We are doing a lot of individual work this week to get ready,” St. Frederick coach Jeff Tannehill said. “Trying to get our guys ready for all the formations we might see from Loyola. They have a really good quarterback and some receivers that can catch the football.”
The St. Frederick defensive backfield featuring Cole Wilson, Devin Gordon, Walker Stinson, John Ellender and Austin Clark. Stinson and Clark are returning with playing time a year ago that will serve the unit well as it prepares for the challenge of grounding the Flyers.
“We didn’t play very well (against Sterlington),” Tannehill said. “We saw some positive things, but the turnovers (five in all) – you try not to put yourself in a hole like that. I look for us to play better this week.”
Tannehill said the experience returning in the backfield “does help” but the key will be mixing coverages against Loyola.
“We have to do a good job of mixing up our looks,” Tannehill said. “Mix our coverages. I feel like we can do some things to disrupt (Loyola) a little bit.”
St. Frederick (1-1) counters with junior quarterback Barrett Coon who has passed for over 100 yards in each of the two regular season games this season.
Tannehill hopes the Warriors can find ways to getting back to hitting the big plays that swing momentum in their favor this week.
“Sterlington played really well (last week) but we had a lot go wrong,” Tannehill said. “We dropped some passes and didn’t gave a lot of positive plays. We need to find ways to hit a couple of long throws and turn some things into big runs.”
