St. Johns made a statement in Thursday’s Diamond Classic showdown against CAAC Red-foe Haslett.
The Redwings had 15 hits on their way to a 14-4 victory over the Vikings in the quarterfinals of the annual tournament.
St. Johns faces Fowlerville in a semifinal game on June 1st.
After trailing 1-0 after two innings, the Redwings scored eight runs in the top of the third to take the lead once and for all. Jimmy McKane’s two-run double started the run for St. Johns, and then Austin Pohl’s RBI, with one out remaining, scored Avery Mauer and gave the Redwings their last score of the inning.
In the bottom of the fifth, Haslett put a dent in St. Johns’ lead with a three-run inning. Trace Woodworth, Hayden Cross and Luke Sleeper each had an RBI for the Vikings.
The Redwings ended the final two innings with six more runs.
For St. Johns, senior Jake Crum went 3 for 3 with a two-run triple and Mauer went 3 for 4 with an RBI double. Also, Josh Endres went 3 for 3 for the Redwings.
Woodworth went 2 for 3 with an RBI for Haslett, and Hunter Ruhstorfer and Zach Berry both went 2 for 3.
