Phoenix St. Mary’s has made a sudden move with Todd Williamson no longer leading the football program and Marcel Lopez named the interim varsity head coach.
Principal Suzanne Fessler confirmed the change in an email.
“I am not at liberty to discuss particulars due to our policy of not discussing personnel matters,” Fessler wrote.

Fessler added that Lopez “has been a member of the St. Mary’s family for many years, first as a student and player, then as a teacher and coach.”
Attempts to reach Williamson were unsuccessful.
Arizona’s best high school football programs:
Last year was Williamson’s first winning season since he took over the St. Mary’s program in 2011.
The Knights went 7-4, losing to eventual Division II runner-up Peoria Liberty 45-20 in the first round of the playoffs. It was the first time St. Mary’s made the state playoffs under Williamson.
St. Mary’s is schedule to begin its team-bonding camp next Monday and its regular season Aug. 21 at Gilbert High School.
