St Michael’s had a strong showing on Monday night playing the 4A Hutto Hippos in Hutto, losing in overtime 55-57. Led by St. Michael’s sophomore, Keith Reynolds, with 28 points, the Crusaders were trailing the first half, playing against a tough zone defense. At halftime, the Crusaders were down 15-26. The second half showed stronger play by the team, and started to take back the 11 point deficit.
With a 1:14 left in the 4th quarter, St. Michael’s freshman, Matt Everett shot a key 3 point shot tying with Hutto 45-45. Hutto moved ahead, and with a key free throw by fellow teammate sophomore, Kenyon Reynolds the Crusaders tied it 47-47 at the end of regulation. Hutto quickly jumped out ahead in overtime 53-47, and with 30 seconds left, it was Hutto 54-50. After a Hutto successfully shot 2 free throws, and with 9 seconds left, St. Michael’s sophomore, Gabriel Vondrak shot a critical 3 point shot, bringing the score to Hutto 56, SMCA 55. Hutto was fouled and was able to make one of their 2 free throws. With the score at 57-55, SMCA brought the ball out with 9 seconds. A failed attempt at a 3 ended the game.
Other top contributors in shooting was Gabriel Vondrak with 11 points, junior, Stephen Schirmer with 8 points and Matt Everett with 5 points. St. Michael’s Crusaders’ next game is against La Vega on Friday in Waco, TX.
