The St. Xavier High School tennis team moved a step closer to another state championship by defeating rival Trinity 3-0 on Saturday in a sectional final at the Freeman Lake Tennis Complex in Elizabethtown, Ky.

In the best-of-five format, St. X won all three singles matches to clinch the victory. Brandon Lancaster beat Zach Kelly 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1, Drew Singerman defeated Austin Strause 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 and Matt Graft knocked off Jack Allen 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3.

With the Tigers holding an insurmountable 3-0 lead, the two doubles matches were stopped.

“It was just a bad matchup for (Trinity),” St. X coach Kerry Lancaster said. “They had no one to match up with Brandon and Drew. … We just have better players.”

St. X and Trinity advanced to the sectional final by winning semifinal matches earlier Saturday. St. X beat North Oldham 3-0, and Trinity defeated Marion County 3-0.

St. X, which has won a record 23 state titles and six in a row, advanced to the state semifinals set for 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the University of Kentucky’s Boone/Downing Tennis Complex. The state final is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Friday.
