St. Xavier (3-1) at Moeller (2-2)
WHEN/WHERE: 7 p.m. Friday at Nippert Stadium
WHAT TO WATCH: This is the 61st meeting between the GCL South rivals. “You really don’t have to say a lot once you get into the GCL South,” St. Xavier coach Steve Specht said. “This is the goal of every young man that dreams of playing at a GCL school. I say it every year – there may be leagues in this country that are as good as the GCL South but there isn’t a league that is better top to bottom. I believe that.” St. Xavier, ranked No. 9 in the AP Division I state poll, defeated Indianapolis Cathedral 31-17 last week. Specht likes the team’s stamina late in the game last week and attributes that to solid conditioning. The Bombers had three rushing touchdowns including one each from running backs Sean Prophit and Pete Rumpke and quarterback Sean Clifford (Penn State commit), who also threw for a touchdown. Senior defensive back Griffin Buczek had a team-high 13 tackles to go along with an interception. Moeller lost to Don Bosco Prep 31-14 last week. Moeller coach John Rodenberg said he’s pleased with the Crusaders defensive line but the secondary needs to catch up. Moeller senior tight end Jake Hausmann (Ohio State) had a season-high 11 receptions for 103 yards and a touchdown. He continues to show why he is an elite tight end from a national perspective. Junior tight end Matt Doston returns after he had surgery on his hand in the offseason. Junior wide receiver Cam Buford had five receptions for 72 yards. Senior quarterback Thomas MacVittie (Pitt commit) returned from a knee strain and threw for 266 yards and two touchdowns after being out since late in the season opener Aug. 28. “He is a very talented quarterback,” Specht said. “Obviously containing what they do offensively is a key.” Moeller senior defensive back Tyler Burandt had 10 tackles last week. Rodenberg said his team is looking forward to Friday night. “It’s X week so our guys are pumped,” he said.
