Another tragedy has struck the high school sports world.

Family and friends are preparing Wednesday for the funeral of 14-year-old Dobie High freshman Steven Moreno in Pasadena, Texas.

Moreno was at practice and conditioning after school last Wednesday. According to a school spokesperson, Moreno told a coach his stomach was hurting and he was taken inside to see the school nurse. Shortly thereafter, he was taken to the hospital.

He died days later, surrounded by family.

In a statement, the Pasadena ISD offered its condolences: “Our deepest sympathy goes to the student’s family. (He) leaves behind a host of friends who will miss him greatly.”

A cause of death has yet to be determined, although his family told TEGNA partner KHOU that it believes it was the heat that made him ill, and his body eventually went into organ failure.

“He was very polite, well mannered,” said Jeniffer Castro, Moreno’s cousin. “He was really smart. You came into his house: ‘Are you thirsty? Take a seat. Do you need anything to eat? Are you okay?’ He was a good kid.”

The community had a fund raiser for his family over the holiday weekend (see video above). A GoFundMe account has been set up to help the family as well. The account is labeled “Our Little Athlete.”

His family has asked those attending the funeral to wear Astros or Texans gear, Moreno’s two favorite teams.
