NASHVILLE — JaCoby Stevens took a moment to watch White Station senior Dillon Mitchell’s game highlights before Monday’s Tennessee Titans Mr. Football Awards ceremony at Nissan Stadium.
The Oakland junior couldn’t help but be impressed with the Oregon commitment, who edged Stevens for the Class 6A Mr. Football Back Award.
“He’s just phenomenal,” Stevens said. “He’s going to be great at Oregon. He’s a great athlete. It’s no surprise that he won.
“This puts me at a spot to work harder. I’m happy for Dillon, and I hope he does great things at Oregon.
Stevens, 6 feet 2 and 195 pounds, had 32 catches for 806 yards and 16 total touchdowns this season. He had 73 tackles in 13 games and six interceptions for the second-ranked Patriots.
“We’re really proud of JaCoby’s season,” Oakland coach Kevin Creasy said. “Of course Dillon Mitchell deserves a lot of praise as well.
“Both of them are team-first guys. They were more worried about their team’s success.”
Mitchell, a 6-foot-1, 200-pound wide receiver, caught 64 passes for 1,155 yards and had 43 carries for 652 yards with 31 total touchdowns.
“I remember playing Oakland last year,” Mitchell said. “He did a great job last year against us. I figured I was going up against somebody that was good.”
Stevens was one of two Rutherford County Mr. Football finalists that finished second in the voting.
Ravenwood kicker Crews Holt edged Siegel kicker Jacob Smith for the Mr. Football Kicker of the Year.
“He’s good,” Smith said. “We’ve always been friends in camps. He’s a senior.
“I think he deserved it. I’ve always got next year as well.”
Smith hit 10-of-11 field goals with a long of 44 yards and was 35-of-36 on extra points. His lone PAT miss was blocked. Smith also averaged 39.8 yards a punt this season for the Stars.
“To be one of the top two kickers — it’s not like the rest of the guys up there,” Siegel coach Greg Wyant said. “They have the top two in their class. He was one of the top two in the state. That says a lot about him and what he’s done in a short time with us.”
