A “one day at a time” mentality with a little help from Colton Ferris — that’s been the key mixture lately for the streaking Windsor High School boys lacrosse team.
As of Monday, the Wizards have rattled off seven straight wins and haven’t looked back since starting their 2015 season with a 1-2 record.
Windsor’s success began turning heads a week ago when it first broke into the top 10 in Class 4A of the CHSAAnow.com rankings at No. 7. A week prior, the Wizards were receiving only one top-10 vote.
According to coach John Belleau, his team’s road win over rival Thompson Valley on March 25 was the turning point.
“It was one of those things where we realized what we were capable of,” Belleau said. “That win was so huge for us and it sparked the win streak that we’re still on.”
Belleau also said that Windsor is trying a new approach as of late, one he says hopefully will flip the script from its 7-9 season a year ago that ended with a first-round exit from the postseason.
The Wizards are now taking things one day at a time. Not one opponent or game, but every practice has become the key focus for Belleau’s squad.
“It’s not one of those things where we say ‘who do we have next?’,” he said. “It’s every day, facing each other and winning each practice.”
Their new outlook and help from Ferris in goal have allowed the Wizards to surpass the amount of wins they tallied last season with five games remaining in the regular season. Two of those victories have included wins over current top-10 teams.
In net, Ferris is averaging 7.9 goals allowed per game while the offense is scoring nearly 11. He is also one of five seniors on Windsor’s 24-player roster.
“Colton has been a big part of it. He’s kept us in a lot of those games and we wouldn’t be where we’re at without it,” Belleau said. “He just has that leader mentality and it’s been showing.”
Windsor (8-2) has a top-10 showdown on deck Monday. The No. 4 Wizards will face No. 6 Battle Mountain (6-2) at home at 7 p.m.
